Yankees win second consecutive title with a surprisingly easy sweep of the Atlanta Braves and put their imprint on the 1900s with their 25th title. All-around team play led the Yankees to their third title in four seasons.

NFL: DENVER BRONCOS

After years of heartbreak, quarterback John Elway wins his second Super Bowl title and is named game’s most valuable player in a 34-19 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. A few months later, Elway retires.

NBA: SAN ANTONIO SPURS

After a lockout-shortened, 50-game season, the Spurs, led by Tim Duncan and David Robinson, dismantle the Lakers in the Western Conference playoffs, then go on to defeat a Cinderella New York Knick team, 4-1, to win their first NBA title.

NHL: DALLAS STARS

Brett Hull scores a controversial game-winning goal in overtime to give the Stars their first Stanley Cup with a 4-2 Series victory over the Buffalo Sabres, who were led by goalie Dominik Hasek.

MLS: D.C. UNITED

After a one-year hiatus, D.C. United resumed its Major League Soccer dynasty with a 2-0 win over the Galaxy in MLS Cup ’99. Jaime Moreno and Ben Olsen scored as United won its third MLS crown in the four-year existence of the league.

WNBA: HOUSTON COMETS

Inspired by the memory of former teammate Kim Perrot, who died of cancer Aug. 19, the Houston Comets defeated the New York Liberty, 2-1, to establish themselves as the first dynasty of the WNBA with their third consecutive title.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: UNITED STATES

In the final at the Rose Bowl, the United States and China turned to penalty kicks to decide a champion. With a Briana Scurry save and five successful attempts, the U.S. won its second title, becoming the first host team to win.

RYDER CUP: UNITED STATES

Rallying from a four-point deficit, the United States team pulled off the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history to defeat the European team and reclaim the Cup in a stirring performance that capped off one of golf’s most memorable years.
