Kentucky All-American Dead at 89

Paul McBrayer, an All-American player at Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky’s winningest coach, died Friday in Richmond, Ky., after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 89.

McBrayer coached from 1946 to 1962, compiling a record of 219-144.

McBrayer, an All-American guard at Kentucky in 1930, was inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987. The Eastern arena inside Alumni Coliseum was named for him and dedicated 10 years ago.

North Carolina State forward Damon Thornton was suspended for today’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Georgia Tech after being arrested following a disturbance at a nightclub Thursday night in Raleigh, N.C. Police said Thornton tried to get into the club without an ID and refused to leave when asked. He was charged with resisting or obstructing a public officer, trespassing and disorderly conduct. . . . Mandy Lueking had 28 points to lead the visiting Saint Louis women to a 73-72 Conference USA victory over No. 23 Memphis on Friday night. Saint Louis is 10-2 overall and 1-1 in conference, while Memphis, which got 32 points from Tamika Whitmore, is 9-2 and 1-1.
