New Mexico State 60, UC Irvine 56--Eric Channing made a key steal, then made four free throws to lift the Aggies (9-5, 2-0) over the Anteaters (5-7, 1-1) in a Big West game at Irvine.
Charles Gosa’s dunk gave New Mexico State a 56-49 lead, a seemingly comfortable margin, with 1:52 to play. But a three-point basket by Ben Jones and two free throws by Adam Stetson put the Anteaters back in the game.
When Gosa turned the ball over with 49 seconds left, Irvine had a chance. But a Jerry Green pass was deflected by Channing, who was fouled. Channing, who scored 12 points, made those two free throws, and then two more.
The first half was one of wild momentum swings. Irvine jumped out to 14-6 lead, then wilted when the Aggies went on a 16-0 run. The Anteaters then closed the half with a 13-1 run and led, 29-23.
The Aggies were led by Bradley Bestor, who scored 17 points.
Jones and Jason Flowers each scored 10 for Irvine.
