A woman who ran in front of a car on Highway 126 suffered major injuries and was in critical condition Monday, authorities said.
Authorities don’t know why Darlene Valles, 21, of Fillmore stepped in front of a car as it traveled eastbound at 55 mph east of Hopper Canyon about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Witnesses told authorities Valles was running west on the shoulder of eastbound lanes when she abruptly turned and darted in front of a Honda driven by Jose Romero, 25.
Romero swerved to avoid Valles, but she was struck by the right front of the car, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Valles was taken to Santa Paula Hospital for treatment of major injuries, authorities said.
She was later transferred to Ventura County Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition Monday in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
The driver was not cited, authorities said.
