With the spring semester beginning later this month, prep athletes have started the ritual of switching schools, and Newbury Park High is the early winner.
Two standout football players from St. Bonaventure High, quarterback Chris Lombardo and 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive lineman Adrian Ayala, have told Seraph Coach Jon Mack they intend to transfer to Newbury Park.
Lombardo, 6-2 and 195 pounds, passed for 2,427 yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior. He has been a varsity starter since his sophomore year.
Mack said Lombardo’s father informed him his son would be transferring under open enrollment. The family lives in Camarillo.
Ayala said his family is moving to Newbury Park this summer but he will transfer under open enrollment this month.
Also transferring is quarterback Jon Palacios, who started six games last season at Royal. Palacios, a junior, has applied to attend Chaminade. His father, Ron, has resigned as Royal’s offensive coordinator.
