Rebels Are Now Seeking a Cease-Fire

After a month of furious attacks against Sierra Leone’s cities and towns, the country’s feared rebel alliance is prepared for a cease-fire, rebel and U.N. officials said. It was unclear whether elected President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah’s government or the Nigerian-led coalition force fighting in its defense support the proposal. Government forces have apparently taken control of the capital, Freetown, after several days of fierce fighting. A cease-fire proposal collapsed last week after rebel field commanders rejected it.
