Crenshaw Macy’s

Your Jan. 12 editorial, “New Retail Challenges,” went a little light on the criticism of Federated Department Stores for their precipitous closure of the Crenshaw Macy’s. The Community Redevelopment Agency had an agreement with Federated to fix up the store and improve the merchandise. We earmarked $3 million, which was to be lent to Federated on very favorable terms, to help in that effort. Federated officials had repeatedly expressed to us their intent to remain at the location.
The closure of Macy’s represents a blow to our overall effort to revitalize South Los Angeles. The way it was done makes it even worse. We now hope that Federated will do the right thing and work with us and the mall owners to enable a quick replacement retailer to be put in place.
