A Hypnotic Suggestion

Think of hypnosis and most likely you will envision a pendular watch or spiraling black-and-white circle. That was the 1800s. Today, hypnotherapists not only use different techniques but are breaking new ground with the help of one of the state’s largest health-care providers. Last month, Blue Cross of California launched its Hypnotherapy Network.
“Our members are looking for a variety of ways to remain healthy, and [hypnotherapy] is one of the services we are providing,” says Elise Anderson, manager of corporate communications at Blue Cross.
The network operates like a referral system, listing hypnotherapists from accredited colleges and offering discounts to members. While the company does not pay for services, it does recommend hypnotherapists in your area. The directory can be viewed at https://www.bluecrossofcalifornia.com.
Believed by some to reduce stress, boost self-confidence and overcome nicotine addiction, hypnosis has traditionally been shunned by the medical world. But George Kappas, director of Tarzana’s Hypnosis Motivation Institute, predicts Blue Cross will legitimize the treatment. “It took a long time for hypnotherapy to be accepted because it isn’t part of traditional psychotherapy training,” he says. “It’s really a timing thing. The whole mind-body connection is coming into vogue right now, and hypnotherapy is part of that.”
