To make Upper Newport Bay safe for water sports, the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board is considering adopting limits for pathogens--disease-causing microorganisms or viruses--in the bay. That action could cost city taxpayers millions of dollars in new programs and plans to ensure that the bay’s water meets the standard.
City officials support improving the bay’s water quality. But due to the costs to Newport, city officials are urging the regional board to do additional study. The board is expected to adopt the limits March 5 at a meeting in Newport Beach City Hall.
