Miami to Nassau in Five Hours by Boat
Miami to Nassau on a day trip by boat? It’s possible with a high-speed, diesel-powered catamaran that began daily operations (except Wednesdays) earlier this month.
The 300-foot-long, 750-passenger boat, named the Cat, can cover the distance in about five hours, traveling at about 50 mph. By contrast, most cruise ships take 12 or more hours. Taking a plane, of course, is fastest, but also more expensive--$120 and up versus $99 round trip for the Cat.
The Cat, run by a Canadian company, Bay Ferries Ltd., has a troubled past: This summer, on runs between Maine and Nova Scotia, it was involved in accidents that injured a boater and killed a fishing boat captain. The boat’s owners insist it is safe to operate. Reservations: tel. (888) 635-9228.
