Explosion and Fire Destroy Vitamins Plant

LONG BEACH — A spectacular fire, with flames shooting 30 feet, destroyed a vitamin manufacturing plant Tuesday.
An explosion at Custom Formulation Corp. in the 1300 block of West Gaylord St. set off the blaze.
Firefighters used a large rotary saw to cut through a metal door and gain access to the inferno inside. It took firefighters about four hours to control the blaze.
The fire was difficult to extinguish because the thousands of vitamin boxes were “highly combustible,” said Bob Caldon, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
Caldon said a few smoldering hot spots were expected to keep firefighters busy late into the night.
