Crime is down for the fifth consecutive year in the city, according to recently released FBI statistics. Major crimes such as rape, robbery, assault, burglary and auto theft totaled 1,490 in 1998, down from 1,901 in 1997--a 22% decrease. Minor crimes--including forgery, fraud, weapons violations and vice--also decreased, but only slightly, from 1997 figures.
