Newport Harbor’s Carey Honored

Jennifer Carey of Newport Harbor High has been selected the Gatorade Circle of Champions high school girls’ volleyball player of the year in the Pacific region by a national panel of sportswriters.
Carey, a senior setter who has committed to Hawaii, led the Sailors to an undefeated season, including the State Division I title. The 1997 Southern Section Division I player of the year, she was 1998 co-player of the year in the Sea View League and MVP of the state Division I title match.
The national player of the year was Logan Tom of Salt Lake City Highland.

Huntington Beach offensive lineman Brendan Rosen has signed with San Diego State, his father, Frank, said Wednesday.
Rosen, who began the past prep season at 6 feet 4 and 240 pounds, was an All-Sunset League first-team selection.

The Southern California Yachting Assn. will hold its 10th Women’s Sailing Convention on Feb. 6 at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar.
