Internet auctioneer EBay Inc. said it will work with law enforcement officials investigating possible fraud in sales conducted on the site but stressed that it was not liable for such actions. The New York City Department of Consumer Affairs confirmed this week that it is investigating EBay, which connects individual buyers and sellers of collectibles online, over complaints that fake sports memorabilia was sold on the site. EBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman said in a statement that the company had not yet received requests for information from the consumer affairs office. “Should the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs decide to pursue an investigation, we pledge to work with the agency and cooperate fully to help resolve the issue,” she said. EBay shares fell $10.88 to close at $292.63 on Nasdaq.
