Raul Salinas’ Trial

In regard to “The Salinas Ending Has Not Been Written,” by Denise Dresser (Commentary, Jan. 25), it is my opinion that her statement that Raul Salinas de Gortari “was tried as a political case” and that “he will remain imprisoned simply because Zedillo wants it so” is a biased affirmation. A unique quality that characterizes President Ernesto Zedillo is that he respects the autonomy of the other two branches of government.
It is unfortunate that her analysis of this issue gets lost in her erroneous conclusions with respect to the president’s involvement.
With regard to the Mexican judicial system and its processes, I’m certain we should have faith that the rule of law will continue to consolidate in Mexico’s life. The struggle lies in all of us, the Congress, the political parties, the organizations, the civil groups and society as a whole.
