Davis’ Decisions

“Civil Rights Leaders Worry About Mixed Signals From Davis” (June 28), on how Gov. Gray Davis is abandoning his progressive campaign promises, captures the feeling of abandonment felt by progressives around California. Davis campaigned to end the divisiveness of the Wilson years, but he has not kept that promise.
True, Davis is less shrill than former Gov. Pete Wilson, and he says some progressive things. But when we measure the rubber on the road, Davis has not taken progressive actions with respect to any of the recent controversial initiatives (187 and 209). As a progressive, I feel abandoned and betrayed.
