Joe Hicks Named to Board of State Bar

LOS ANGELES — Joe Hicks, executive director of the Los Angeles Human Relations Commission, was appointed Thursday to the State Bar Board of Governors.
Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa made the appointment to the 22-member board charged with overseeing the State Bar and administering discipline and licensing of California lawyers.
“Joe Hicks is a man of extraordinary integrity,” said Villaraigosa. “It is critical to the work of the bar that the board include individuals like Mr. Hicks who can transcend political lines and focus on bringing people together.”
Hicks has served as the head of the city’s Human Relations commission since 1997. Prior to that, he was executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles. And in the 1980s, he worked for the American Civil Liberties Union and the Service Employees International Union Local 660.
Members of the State Bar Board of Governors are selected by state officials and legal organizations. The Assembly speaker, Senate Rules Committee and California Young Lawyers Assn. each appoint one member. The governor appoints four members and the State Bar district associations select 15.
