CASTAIC — A 17-year-old boy swimming in Pyramid Lake drowned Sunday afternoon after he developed cramps and went under before help arrived, authorities said.
The unidentified teen was swimming in the lake about 4 p.m. when at least one witness heard his cries for help, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Larry Gump.
No lifeguards were on duty, but two sheriff’s deputies were in the area at the time, Gump said. One deputy donned scuba gear and conducted an underwater search, to no avail.
A Sheriff’s Department dive team was called about 6:30 p.m., and the boy’s body was found shortly after 7, said Gump.
Investigators said the death was accidental.
