Population Growth

I was saddened to read of the passing of Rep. George Brown (July 17). I met Brown in the early 1970s when I was an activist with Zero Population Growth. Brown’s interest in science and technology had led him to concern about the effects of overpopulation on the world’s resources and its deleterious consequences for the standard of living of the human species.
My sadness was augmented by a feeling of bitter irony when I turned a few pages to read that the Earth’s population is now reaching 6 billion and California’s is reaching 34 million. Are there any elected officials or candidates for office who have the knowledge and wisdom to address this catastrophe?
