Alfred Nero, a 27-year firefighting veteran, was named the city’s sixth fire chief, ending a four-month search to replace retiring chief William Simpkins. Simpkins led the Brea Fire Department for 10 years. He plans to move to Palm Springs.
City officials said Nero’s experience and leadership abilities are a perfect match for the job. Nero said he will carve out his own niche, bringing the department a new identity. He starts Aug. 23.
