Evangelist Oral Roberts remained in stable condition Sunday at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, where he is recovering from heart surgery, a hospital official said.
The 81-year-old Roberts, a Newport Beach resident for 43 years, had an angioplasty performed at the hospital after he suffered a mild heart attack two weeks ago, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Roberts has suffered from heart problems for years and had an angioplasty in 1992 after experiencing chest pains following a live broadcast on an Orange County-based religious network. He underwent two successful surgeries in 1991 to widen his carotid arteries.
Roberts retired in 1993, and his son, Richard, took over his father’s position as president of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. The elder Roberts remains chancellor and continues his speaking engagements.
