Valley College will open a $175,000 computer lab Thursday, with 45 personal computers and five Apple I-Macs.
The Lab for Academic and Instructional Resources was funded by CalWORKs, California Work Responsibility to Kids, a state welfare-to-work program.
CalWORKs students will have first priority, but the lab will be open to all students and faculty on a space-available basis, Richard Holdredge, director of the computer lab, said.
The computers were delivered in November, and technicians have been installing software and working out bugs ever since.
“This is a multiuse platform for college-wide use,” said Holdredge.
The computers will provide Internet access, word-processing capabilities, CD-ROMs and digitized video programs for multimedia software, he said.
The lab will be located in the Valley College library.
