Irvine Valley Opens Playoffs

The Irvine Valley women’s basketball team plays in the second round of the Southern California basketball playoffs at 7 tonight against visiting Southwestern.
The third-seeded Lasers (25-5) got a first-round bye and haven’t played since Feb. 19. Southwestern is 17-10.
In today’s other games: No. 16 Fullerton (19-12) is at No. 1 Ventura (28-3) and No. 9 Santa Ana (22-9) is at No. 8 Canyons (20-9).

William Lou, who resigned as Garden Grove High girls’ tennis coach in November after six seasons, has his old job back.
When Lou, 42, resigned, he was seeking a change in his teaching schedule that would allow him to have a conference period and a coaching period. Lou, who led the Argonauts to four Garden Grove League titles, said he has been granted that schedule change by Principal Gene Campbell.

Tyler Kruse, a junior linebacker at Fountain Valley, has transferred to Mater Dei, his father, Jim, said.
Kruse was a two-year starter at Fountain Valley, was named to The Times All-County first team for the 1998 season.

The Golden State Athletic Conference postseason women’s basketball tournament begins today.
The Southern California College women are top-seeded in the tournament and host Westmont. Concordia will host Point Loma today.
