Monroe 1, Manual Arts 0--Liz Nemeth scored in the 59th minute on a cross by Zulema Mejicano and the Vikings defeated the Toilers in a City Division semifinal at Manual Arts.
Fifth-seeded Monroe (13-5-1), which got six saves from goalkeeper Camie Wiltshire, will face top-seeded Belmont at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Division title game at Birmingham.
Coach Gregg Johnson of Monroe said Manual Arts (11-4-2) double-teamed Nemeth, who has 20 goals, throughout the game. But the Toilers moved to guard Mejicano on the scoring play.
San Pedro 3, El Camino Real 1--Laine Montgomery scored in the final minute of the first half to pull El Camino Real (13-6-2) into a 1-1 halftime tie with the Pirates (13-6-1) in a City Championship semifinal at San Pedro.
BOYS’ GAME
El Camino Real 3, Belmont 1--The Conquistadores led, 3-0, after 20 minutes in a quarterfinal at El Camino Real.
“We heard [Belmont] had a strong forward, so we wanted to put a lot of pressure on them from the start,” said David Hussey, El Camino Real’s coach.
That pressure gave the Conquistadores a 2-0 lead after 12 minutes on Tony Sangari’s seventh goal and Chris Johnstone’s fourth. Minutes later, Jose Rivera-Otero added his 15th for a 3-0 lead.
Third-seeded El Camino Real plays Thursday at second-seeded Reseda in a semifinal. This is the fourth consecutive season El Camino Real and Reseda will meet in the playoffs. Reseda beat the Conquistadores in a semifinal last season.
