Man Held After Car Hits Deputies’ Vehicle

An apparently intoxicated man slammed his car into the back of a parked sheriff’s patrol car early Friday morning, sending the deputies who had just exited the car jumping for cover, authorities said.
Deputies William Edwards and Theo Langford were questioning the driver of a Lincoln Continental about 12:30 a.m. along Rice Avenue in Oxnard when a car approached without its lights on, authorities said.
The three men dove into a nearby planter as the approaching car, a black Pontiac Grand Am, barreled into the back of the sheriff’s car, which rear-ended the Continental, authorities said.
The Grand Am’s driver, Ramon Ramirez, and passenger Juan Perez, suffered head and facial injuries, authorities said. They were taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center for treatment. Afterward, Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and causing injuries to a passenger, authorities said.
The sheriff’s patrol unit sustained major damage, while the Grand Am was ruled a total loss, authorities said.
The deputies and the driver of the Continental were not hurt.
