BOYS
Karl Mayr
Sport: Soccer
Year: Junior
School: El Camino Real
Season at a glance: The Conquistadore goalkeeper, although unsteady at times, posted five shutouts and helped his team to its second consecutive Northwest Valley Conference title and first City Section championship.
Week at a glance: Less than a month after being pulled from several games for lapses in concentration, Mayr was brilliant in sparking El Camino Real to three playoff victories and the City title. He had 13 saves in a semifinal victory over Reseda and he made five saves in a 1-0 victory over Locke in the City final.
GIRLS
Erin Voeltz
Sport: Softball
Year: Junior
School: Westlake
Career at a glance: Voeltz has been among the region’s elite pitchers for two seasons, but offensive support has been lacking. The right-hander’s 23-23 record doesn’t reflect her 334 strikeouts in 321 innings and a career 1.07 earned-run average.
Week at a glance: Voeltz was dominating Saturday in the Hart tournament, throwing a two-hitter against Quartz Hill, formerly ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times and the defending Southern Section Division II champion. Voeltz struck out nine and held 1998 Valley player of the year Jodie Cox without a hit in a 5-0 Westlake victory.
