City lifeguard tryouts are scheduled for Sunday and will include a 1,000-meter swim, which must be completed in less than 20 minutes, and a 1,000-meter run, swim, run competition.
The Fire and Marine Department will select from 40 to 50 people who qualify for a training class. Candidates must attend the class, held most weekend days in April and May, in order to be considered for a lifeguard position. The department will hire the top training candidates as needed during the summer. Starting pay for ocean lifeguards is $10.76 per hour. Registration forms may be picked up at the Lifeguard Station near the Newport Pier from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. or at City Hall, 3300 Newport Blvd. Information: (949) 644-3170.
