“The Harmonists,” a 1998 feature film that recounts the success of a vaudeville act in 1930s Germany, will kick off the 1999 Orange County Jewish Film Festival at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at U.C. Irvine.
Sponsored by University Synagogue in Irvine, the festival will later show “Blind Man’s Bluff” and “Overture to Glory” at 6:30 p.m. on April 11 and May 2, respectively.
Based on a novel by Lilly Perry Amitai, “Blind Man’s Bluff” tells the story of a young Israeli pianist searching for independence and maturity. “Overture to Glory” follows a cantor who leaves his family and prayers behind to perform in the Warsaw Opera, but then struggles to balance newfound success with feelings of responsibility toward his family and community.
Screenwriter and producer Michael Berlin will speak after each film.
All screenings will be held at the Film and Video Center in the Humanities Instructional Building on the campus. Tickets for the three screenings are $45. Parking costs $2. Information: (949) 553-3535.
