Three Injured After Pole Falls 22 Stories

NEW YORK — A 15-foot aluminum pole fell 22 stories from the building where the ball drops every New Year’s Eve, injuring three people.
The 4-inch-thick rod was holding a 50-foot-wide canvas sign that apparently broke loose in high winds at One Times Square on Thursday. As the sign came loose, it struck a bank of lights along the building, showering debris onto crowded West 42nd Street.
The pole struck three women: a traffic officer and two people walking to lunch. One suffered a cut to the head, another was cut in the hand and the third was hit in the back. All were hospitalized in stable condition.
In July, an 85-year-old woman was killed when scaffolding crashed through the roof of her Times Square apartment.
