A large Hollywood-style sign beckoning people to the refurbished Mission Viejo Mall was approved in concept Monday by the Planning Commission. White metal letters, some 4 feet high and others 10 feet high, would spell out “The Shops at Mission Viejo,” the proposed new name of the mall. The 1,400-square-foot sign’s exact location has not been determined, but preliminary plans have it on a slope facing Interstate 5. The commission ordered project developer Simon Property Group to erect the first few letters of a model sign at the site so a commission committee can gauge the sign’s true size.
