Dialysis Patient Kills Self, Wounds Nurse

A dialysis patient, apparently angry over being denied something to drink, shot and critically wounded a hospital nurse before killing himself in a hospital in Kankakee, Ill. Ernest Jefferson began arguing with the nurse after being refused additional fluids, which are routinely restricted during dialysis, said Provena St. Mary’s Hospital spokesman Paul Tutt. About an hour after being discharged, Jefferson, 69, returned to the nurse’s office with a .38-caliber handgun and fired four shots, striking her three times before fatally shooting himself in the head, police said.
