Fleshman Will Run for Stanford

Lauren Fleshman of Canyon High, the runner-up in the 1998 national cross-country championships, has made a verbal commitment to Stanford.
Fleshman, 1998 state Division I cross-country champion, took recruiting trips to Stanford, UCLA, Arizona, Northern Arizona and Colorado before deciding to join the Cardinal, which won the NCAA championship in 1996, was second in 1997 and third last year.
“There was no bad place to go,” Fleshman said. “It came down to which coach I liked best and where I felt most comfortable.”
Stanford had only one senior among its top seven runners last fall.
“It’s a good opportunity to be on a great team,” she said. “It will give me a chance to train with runners who are better than me.”
Fleshman, who was fourth in the 3,200 meters in the 1998 state track and field championships, will receive financial aid during her freshman year before receiving an 88% athletic scholarship for the rest of her college career.
