Rosters Set for Basketball All-Star Games

The rosters were announced for the Orange County All-Star basketball game, which will be April 24 at Orange Coast College. The girls’ game is at 5 p.m. and boys’ game at 8 p.m.

Northwood High in Irvine, scheduled to open this fall, has added six more coaches to its staff.

Rob Stuart, Richard Crowe and Zaverio Brenner are coming over from Irvine High. Stuart will head the TimberWolves’ baseball program and be an assistant football coach. Crowe will be an assistant baseball coach and Brenner an assistant with the football and track teams.

Becky Yamano from Woodbridge High will head the boys’ and girls’ swimming programs, and Craig Huff from University High will be a football assistant.

Seth Sushinsky from Lancaster High will be boys’ and girls’ tennis coach.

Leonard Lopez resigned as boys’ soccer coach at Pacifica High after four seasons to pursue personal goals, according to Athletic Director George Terlaak. Lopez led the Mariners to two playoff berths, and a share of the Garden Grove League title in 1998.

John Marsh quit as boys’ water polo coach at Pacifica after two seasons for personal reasons. The Mariners made the playoffs both seasons.

Servite senior Matt Terry was selected to the All-Far West soccer team. Terry, the Golden West League offensive player of the year, was the only county player selected to the 18-player team.

The seventh Nike International Premier Cup will be Saturday and Sunday at Cal State Fullerton. The 12-team boys’ under-14 Los Angeles Regional soccer tournament includes the Irvine Strikers, Huntington Beach NHB Black, and Newport Beach Slammers FC. The four-team under-14 girls’ tournament includes the Newport Beach Slammers.

Play begins both days at 8:30 a.m. The winners advance to Beaverton, Ore., June 4-6, for the North American finals. The North American champion advances to the world championships in Barcelona, Spain, July 19-22.

The National Scholastic Surfing Assn. will hold its 1999 College, High School and Middle School State Championships Saturday and Sunday at Church Beach in San Clemente.

The college competition will take place Saturday and the high school and middle school competition on Sunday. Teams are composed of six male surfers, one female surfer and one longboarder.

Among the colleges competing will be UC Santa Barbara, the defending state and national champion, five-time national champion UC San Diego, UC Irvine, San Diego State and USC.

Huntington Beach, which has won 17 national championships, leads the high school contingent. Also participating will be San Clemente, Edison and Marina. Huntington Beach’s Dwyer Middle School, which won the 1998 national championship, also returns.

The top 12 college teams, top eight high school teams and top four middle school teams advance to the NSSA National Interscholastic Championships, June 20-21, also at Church Beach.
