Air Standards

* Thank you for the March 18 article, “Smog Study of Children Yields Ominous Results,” as well as the March 1 article, “Cancer Risk From Air Pollution Still High, Study Says.” The studies roll in. One question remains: Why do we allow so much pollution to endanger our families? An industry can cause cancer in 100 people for every 1 million it exposes to pollution.
That’s OK, according to our own Air Quality Management District (AQMD Rules 1401 and 1402). It’s not OK for 99 of those people--they would be safe if our local standards met Clean Air Act goals. They don’t. That’s negligent, dangerous and simply unacceptable.
