Adding Police

Instead of hiring 157 police officers, as Mayor Richard Riordan has proposed in his new budget (April 21), that money would be better spent on hiring 157 counselors for our public schools in a further attempt to avoid the horrible events at Columbine High School in Colorado occurring here.

It’s time we shifted our emphasis from discipline and punishment to prevention. Those 157 police officers would only add to the too many we already have assigned to find petty crimes and traffic violations in order to bring in moneys to pay their salaries. More school counselors could assist young people in dealing with the tough realities of growing up in L.A.
