Long Beach Wins and Takes Lead in Series

Doug Ast scored two goals and Manny Legace saved 25 shots to help the Ice Dogs defeat the Houston Aeros, 5-1, Sunday night before 4,002 at Long Beach in the best-of-five International Hockey League Western Conference semifinal playoff series.

The Ice Dogs lead the series, 2-1, and can advance with a victory Tuesday night at the Long Beach Arena. The winner of the series will play the Chicago Wolves, who swept the Manitoba Moose.

Ast scored his goals in the first period to give the Ice Dogs a 2-0 lead. He also had an assist as Long Beach took a 5-0 lead after two periods.

Sean Tallaire, Patrik Augusta and Jaroslav Modry also scored for the Ice Dogs.

David Oliver scored Houston’s goal, his second of the series.

Aero goalie Manny Fernandez took the loss. He gave up three goals on 11 shots before being replaced by Danny Lorenz.

The Ice Dogs’ Dan Lambert extended his assist streak to four games. He has five assists in that span.
