Picnic to Aid Santa Clarita Film Bureau

Employees in Santa Clarita’s growing movie industry are holding a family-style picnic May 15 to raise money for an effort to keep productions in Southern California.
The Santa Clarita Valley is home to several productions, including “Power Rangers” and “Melrose Place.” But recently entertainment jobs have been disappearing from the Santa Clarita Valley as more movies and TV shows are produced in cheaper markets such as Canada.
Valencia Entertainment International, an independent studio, is organizing the family day, which will raise funds for the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce’s Film Bureau. The event includes a barbecue lunch, games and entertainment by local bands and characters from “Power Rangers.”
Proceeds from ticket sales will help the chamber promote the area’s film facilities, said Karen Weiss, a spokeswoman for Valencia Entertainment.
“Jobs have already been lost,” Weiss said. “The realization of this is beginning to snowball, and now we’re trying to do something about it.”
The event will be held at the Legacy Partners Rye Canyon facility at 25100 Rye Canyon Road in Valencia from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets at the door cost $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12. For more information, call (805) 257-8000.
