Schools Not Penalized for Recent Absenteeism

LOS ANGELES — School officials’ fears that high absenteeism on some campuses after the Littleton slayings would cost the district hundreds of thousands of dollars were unfounded, a state official said Tuesday.
The state does not count the last half of April, May and June in its average daily attendance rate, the official said, because so many absences occur as the weather warms up and the school year winds down.
“It’s designed that way,” said Sandra Silva, a fiscal consultant for the state Department of Education. “The highest number of absences occur after April 15, so the state didn’t want to penalize districts. The concerns were for nothing.”
Before mid-April, the district receives about $21.33 per pupil for every day that a student attends school.
