The City Council this week overturned a March vote by the Planning Commission to allow construction of a cellular phone antenna disguised as a palm tree. The council voted 3 to 2 against the project on Tuesday and expects to pass a formal resolution soon rejecting AirTouch Cellular’s plan to build an antenna mounted on a 60-foot steel pole inside a fake palm tree.
AirTouch representatives said they need the antenna at Los Coyotes Drive and Beach Boulevard to provide stronger signals for customers near the area. But that argument wasn’t enough to convince council members Steve Berry, Jack W. Mauller and Patsy Marshall, who objected that the fake tree would conflict with city efforts to beautify Beach Boulevard.
