Northridge Adds Forward to Mix

Cal State Northridge has signed 6-foot-5 small forward Whitney White from Lincoln (Ill.) College.

White averaged 14 points and six rebounds as a sophomore at Lincoln and was selected all-conference. He graduated from Argo High in Chicago, where he averaged 15 points and five rebounds as a senior and was picked all-conference.

“Whitney is an athletic three man who will give us much-needed depth at small forward,” Coach Bobby Braswell said. “He is an outstanding rebounder and defender. We are excited about the new dimension Whitney will bring to our program.”

BASEBALL

* The City Section has finalized its playoff tournament schedule. The playoffs will begin on May 25, with quarterfinal games on May 27, the semifinals on June 1 and the finals on June 3 at Dodger Stadium.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Marion Jones, Regina Jacobs and Ryan Wilson, former high school standouts in the region, will compete in the inaugural Track & Field Assn. ProChampionships on June 6 in Uniondale, N.Y..

Jones, Track & Field News’ 1997 and 1998 women’s athlete of the year and a 1993 graduate of Thousand Oaks High, will run in the 100 meters.

Jacobs, runner-up in the women’s 1,500 in the 1997 World Championships and a 1981 graduate of what is now Campbell Hall, will run in the 800.

Wilson, a 1993 graduate of Agoura, will compete in the men’s 3,000.

* The L.A. Invitational outdoor meet will be held on Saturday at Northridge.

The meet will begin with the field events at 8 a.m. Running events will start at noon.

CROSS-COUNTRY

* The California state 10K cross-country championships will be one of four races held on Sunday at Joshua Ranch Trail in Palmdale.

A mile race for children ages 8 and under will start at 7:30 a.m., followed at 7:45 a.m. by a mile run for children ages 9-12.

A 5K run for competitors of all ages will start at 8 a.m., followed by the 10K run at 8:45 a.m.

FISHING

* Bassing for Abused Kids, a charity bass-fishing tournament, is scheduled for Saturday at Castaic Lake Recreation Area.

Sign-ups are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday at the west ramp parking lot at Castaic Lake and from 4 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.
