Volleyball Finals Nearly All-Valley Affair

North Hills Monroe will play Woodland Hills Taft for the City title and Hamilton will meet Granada Hills Kennedy for the Division championship in boys’ volleyball finals Friday night at Cal State Northridge.
Hitters Chito Lobregas, 5 feet 5, and Razell Loveria, 5-7, led top-seeded Monroe to a 15-10, 15-5, 16-14 semifinal victory over Chatsworth Tuesday.
Mike Gledhill, 6-5, led second-seeded Taft to a 15-8, 14-16, 15-6, 15-6 semifinal victory over Poly.
Hamilton advanced to the Division final with a 15-4, 14-16, 17-15, 15-6 victory over University. Kennedy beat Canoga Park, 15-6, 15-9, 15-5.

Westchester’s baseball team tied a state record last week when the Comets hit five consecutive home runs in the first inning of a 19-1 victory over Venice.
Paul Mitchell, Brian Barton, Brandon Watson, Adan Hernandez and Jerry Alexander homered for the Comets, who tied the record set by Fallbrook in 1987.
The national record for homers in an inning is 11, set by Choctaw (Okla.) vs. Oklahoma City McGuinness in 1977.
Choctaw also holds the national record for consecutive homers in an inning with seven. Rochester (Mich.) hit five in a 1988 game; Northwest Classen (Okla.) did it in 1965.

The City Section has announced a change in its baseball playoff schedule.
The playoff seeding meeting will be held Wednesday. First-round games will be played May 25, quarterfinals May 27, semifinals June 1.
Championship games will be played June 3 at Dodger Stadium.

A memorial service for Jim Cheffers, former commissioner of the City Section who died of heart failure April 15, will be held Saturday at Hope Lutheran Church in Whittier at 1 p.m.
