Silence will soon replace the buzz of model airplanes that has pervaded parts of Mile Square Regional Park for 25 years when hobbyists are officially evicted from the site to make way for a golf course expansion. Now that the Orange County Planning Commission has approved the park’s environmental report, county Supervisor Charles V. Smith said the Board of Supervisors is sure to do the same Tuesday. “I don’t see any problem,” he said. “At this point, it’s just a formality.”

In a last-ditch attempt to block the project, the Save Mile Square Park Committee plans to file a lawsuit against the county, said Bob Richards, the committee’s chairman. He said those plans will move forward if and when the supervisors approve the project.

Smith said there are no grounds for a lawsuit. He said the expansion project is long overdue, especially the creation of seven sports fields on 23 1/2 acres of the park that will be given to the city for youth programs. If approved, construction on the $8-million project could begin as soon as May 31.
