SAN DIEGO — Darren Oliver hurt San Diego with his bat and arm, hitting a key single and pitching seven solid innings for his first victory since April 27 as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Padres, 5-2, Tuesday night.
Oliver gave up two runs and four hits as the Cardinals won their third game in a row. He struck out three and walked two. Over his previous three starts, Oliver had one loss and two no-decisions.
Matt Clement (0-4) took the loss even though he had a personal best of eight strikeouts in his ninth career appearance. Clement went seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits and four walks as the Padres lost their third in a row.
San Diego’s Tony Gwynn, mired in a four-for-24 slump, singled in the third to move within 26 hits of the 3,000 mark.
The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Joe McEwing singled, advanced to third on Oliver’s single and came home on a double play.
