Martinez Ties Record With Home Run Barrage

SEATTLE — Edgar Martinez hit three home runs, tying a major league record with five homers in two games, to give the Seattle Mariners a 9-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins and overshadow teammate Ken Griffey Jr.
Martinez, who homered twice in the opener of the series against Minnesota, hit a solo homer in the fifth, a two-run shot in the sixth and a solo homer in the eighth, the 21st time a player has hit five in two games.
Martinez went three for five with four RBIs and has seven homers this season. It is his 16th multihomer game and the second time he has hit three homers in a game.
Martinez’s effort even outdid Griffey, who hit his fourth home run in five days to tie Jose Canseco for the major league lead with 15 homers.
The Mariners matched their season high with their third consecutive victory and handed the Twins their fifth loss in a row.
