Brian Sinay, a junior at Irvine University High, shot a seven-under-par 65 on Thursday at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs, winning the Southern Section individual golf title for the second time in three years and breaking the section record of 66 set by Tiger Woods.
“I just felt I couldn’t miss a shot,” said Sinay, who three-putted his last hole for his only bogey. “I thought I could birdie every hole.”
It was a career-best score for Sinay, who won the section title on the same course as a freshman. This time, he finished a shot ahead of teammate Ron Won and two ahead of defending champion James Oh of Lakewood.
Woods won the section title three times while at Anaheim Western, twice at Canyon. He shot 68 to win both times. He shot a 66 at La Cumbre Country Club, a par-71 course in Santa Barbara.
