VAN NUYS — A 43-year-old man was injured Saturday when his car was smashed by a motorist fleeing police during a traffic stop, authorities said.
The incident began at 5 p.m. at Hazeltine Avenue and Burbank Boulevard when a Los Angeles police officer tried to pull over a man in a Chevy Impala who was speeding, said LAPD spokesman Don Cox.
The 23-year-old man, who authorities declined to identify, allegedly increased his speed and continued northbound on Hazeltine.
Two minutes later, he ran a red light at the Vanowen Street intersection, where his car collided with a Toyota heading west, injuring the driver, Cox said.
As the Impala driver tried to flee the accident scene, his car jumped the curb and hit a store, slightly injuring a pedestrian, Cox said.
The driver, who was not injured, was taken into custody. The driver of the Toyota was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
The pedestrian did not need medical assistance.
