The Police Department will participate in a national awareness program this week that encourages people to use seat belts or child-restraint devices. Operation ABC Mobilization, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is a cooperative effort between businesses and law enforcement agencies to educate the public about the importance of seat belts. According to the NHTSA, the program’s outreach efforts resulted in 19 million Americans’ fastening their seat belts last year.
