War in Kosovo

* What a record for us and for NATO! First: a hospital, a consulate, a prison. Now, the barracks of the Kosovo Liberation Army (May 23)! One despairs for the trillions of dollars spent on supposedly “smart bombs.” At least, allow us an acronym: I suggest SLOB, translated to read: “Sorry, Lost Our Bearings.” One might be more understanding if we weren’t spending away our future on research and development.

To Mark Hilgenberg (letter, May 23) and to all those peace-loving citizens yearning for an end to the war in Kosovo: The war can come to an end in a minute. All Milosevic has to do is to accept NATO’s demands. He needs to get his wild arsonists out of Kosovo. To allow the Kosovars back to their destroyed and looted homes. To let an international peacekeeping force see to it that the Kosovars are no longer being abused by him and his criminals and to let the Kosovars run their own affairs. Once Milosevic signs these demands, he will have the time to stand trial for his miserable, horrible war crimes against his very own citizens.

It’s interesting how many people here in the U.S. were in favor of doing battle with Milosevic until the first innocent victims were killed. Now everyone wants to “reevaluate” our involvement in Yugoslavia. Wake up, America! Bombs will go astray. Maps will be wrong. People will be killed. It’s called war and it’s messy, deadly and unfair at times. That’s why you want to use it only as the last resort.

You cannot have a “casual” war where only the “bad guys” are punished. It’s just not possible. And I hope it never becomes possible. For war needs to be ugly, really ugly, in order for us to want peace badly enough.
