In the South Coast League finals:
Mitchell wins--Capistrano Valley’s Carolyn Mitchell defeated Dana Hills’ Kate Romm, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-2, to win the singles title. Dana Hills’ Kady Pooler and Chelsy Thompson won the doubles title, defeating Capistrano Valley’s Leigh Ann Merryman and Jennifer Bailey, 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (2-7), 6-1.
In the Garden Grove League girls’ cross-country finals:
Krause sets record--Pacifica senior Christine Krause ran three miles in 17:46 to win the individual championship and set a course record at Mile Square Park, eclipsing the mark of 17:56 set by La Quinta’s Kathy Cannon in 1986.
Pacifica, which had seven runners place in the top 10, won its seventh consecutive league title.
At the Sea View League finals:
Woodbridge, Steen win--Nicole Scott finished second in 17:39 over the three-mile course at Irvine Park to lead second-ranked Woodbridge, which won with 22 points. Newport Harbor junior Amber Steen won in 17:20 to help the Sailors finish second with 45 points.
In the Tournament of Champions field hockey semifinals:
Marina 2, Newport Harbor 0--Goals by sophomore Rachel Benninger and senior Kristin Barnes helped Marina (12-4) advance to Saturday’s final to play Edison, which defeated Huntington Beach, 1-0, on Mary Frausto’s goal.
