Pay Raise

Re “Teachers Union ‘Turns Up Heat’ for Raise,” Nov. 4: I had a good laugh reading the article on the United Teachers of Los Angeles asking for a raise in pay.
This is the same organization (I wish you wouldn’t refer to it as a union) that in 1992 accepted an 11% cut in pay, an 11% increase in class size, dramatic reductions in health care benefits and additional benefits, not the least of which, sabbaticals, resulted in a personal loss of the equivalent of $25,000. All of this loss came about without a single day of job action.
How many people are willing to take such a loss and not be bitter? By the way, the “leadership” in power at that time is yet the same. Sad for the L.A. teachers and sad for the students as well.
